International Literacy Day 2014
MEDIA RELEASE: 29 September 2014
Literacy is a problem in New Zealand. Did you know one in four New Zealanders struggle with literacy in some way and the average reading achievement score for New Zealand has not changed significantly over the past decade. There are large differences in reading achievement scores - 18% of Māori and 16% of Pasifika children are not achieving basic literacy and numeracy skills by age 10 compared to 4% of Non-Māori and Non-Pasifika children.
ECC is working with Literacy Aotearoa Wellington to raise awareness of literacy issues on International Literacy Day – Monday 8 September. Between 9.30am-2pm there will be a stall outside the NZ Post shop on Manners Street Wellington – there will be heaps of information available and even free books, come by and check it out!
